When we think of India in terms of religious diversity, it would not be uncommon for some to say “what diversity.” True, India is mostly predominated by Hinduism but Islam is on the raise in India. India is home to nearly 1.1 billion people with only around 12% practicing Islam. As India continues to try to seek a balance with the West in terms of business relations it must now try to seek a balance among its Islamic population. The reports of discrimination are on the rise in India and many fear it will not improve. A CNN report, stated that discrimination can be directed towards the Islamic population in many ways. For example, if one has an address which is known to be an “Islamic neighborhood” that individual is denied. They have been ‘blacklisted.” Other reports include, housing and employment discrimination.

This type of social issue will need to be addressed by the Indian government. As of now, the fight to alleviate religious discrimination has been taken to the backburner as India tries to improve in the areas of modernizing its society.
