Broader Protrol Agents Beat 32-year-old Anastasio Hernández Roja to Death

New PBS documentary exposes the tasing and beating death of a Mexican immigrant by U.S. border agents in California, and has renewed scrutiny of what critics call a culture of impunity. In May 2010, 32-year-old Anastasio Hernández Rojas was caught trying to enter the United States from Mexico near San Diego. He had previously lived in the United States for 25 years and was the father of five U.S.-born children. But instead of deportation, Hernández Rojas’ detention ended in his death. A number of border officers were seen beating him, before one tasered him at least five times. He died shortly afterward. The agents say they confronted Hernández Rojas because he became hostile and resisted arrest. But previously undisclosed videos recorded by eyewitnesses on their cell phones show a different story. “All eyewitnesses that we spoke to basically tell the same story of a man hogtied and handcuffed behind his back, not resisting, being beaten repeatedly — by batons, by kicks, by punches, by the use of a taser — for almost 30 minutes until he died,” says reporter John Carlos Frey, whose exposé aired in a national television special last Friday night, as part of a joint investigation by the PBS broadcast, “Need to Know,” and the Investigative Fund of the Nation Institute.

GOP seeking to change how PA awards its electoral votes

This is extremely upsetting. The GOP in my state, Pennsylvania, is seeking to change how PA awards it electoral votes. Why is this important? Because the electoral votes decides who will be our next President.

Senate Majority Leader Dominic Pileggi is trying to gather support to change the state’s “winner-takes-all” approach for awarding electoral votes. Instead, he’s suggesting that Pennsylvania dole them out based on which candidate wins each of the 18 congressional districts, with the final two going to the contender with the most votes statewide.

So far, the idea has received support from colleagues of the Delaware County Republican in the state House and from Republican Gov. Tom Corbett. But Democrats, who have carried the state in presidential contests since 1992, said the shift would erode Pennsylvania’s clout.

How would this change things? Consider that President Obama won Pennsylvania by 10 percentage points in 2008. But:

An analysis by the online news service Capitolwire noted that had the proposed distribution process been in place in Pennsylvania in 2008 before the state lost one congressional district due to a population decline in the 2010 census, Mr. Obama would have won only 11 of the state’s 21 votes.

Facts:

After the November 2009 elections, the Wake County school board dismantled socio-economic diverse schools and began to implement a neighborhood schools plan that would resegregate schools.

Resegregation in schools would be a disaster. It would turn back the clock fifty years with the creation of high poverty, racially isolated schools. The integration plan destroyed by Koch-supported board of education members was used as a model for high achieving, diverse schools throughout the country.

This October 2011, Wake Country elections will decide if schools become resegregated. Koch-supported candidates are still pushing for neighborhood schools and to end diversity.

The Koch brothers free market, libertarian ideology rests on privatization in society, especially the privatization of education.

The Kochs founded Americans for Prosperity in 2004, and AFP indirectly poured hundreds of thousands of dollars into the Wake County school board elections and helped jeopardize the diversity policy.

Philadelphia teen “flash mob”

As a resident of Philadelphia, it is a shame that people here resort to this kind of criminal behavior. Who is to blame? Themselves and their parents. There are far worst places on this planet where people can’t even get 3 meals a day. But yet they don’t resort to this kind of behavior. They think it’s fun so now it’s time to pay the price. I say put them all in jail. Parents need to also be better parents and raise their kids with morals and what constitutes good vs. bad behavior.

The leader of a Philadelphia teen “flash mob” that assaulted people at random and provoked the mayor to lecture black youths of personal responsibility has been sentenced to confinement in a juvenile detention facility.

A judge berated the 17-year-old and two other youths Thursday for beating four people and robbing them. The teens admitted their involvement in the July 29 rampage.

“Your actions, behavior, and attitude are appalling and disgusting for civilized society,” Family Court Judge Kevin Dougherty told the teens. “Philadelphia will not be a laughingstock because [of] a few individuals who decide to hunt human beings and laugh about it.”

Destructive flash mobs, in which youths often congregate by texting each other or using other social media, have become a problem for many communities. Philadelphia has witnessed about 10 such incidents in the past two years, with some assaults occurring in broad daylight.

The July 29 attack prompted Democratic Mayor Michael A. Nutter, who is black, to deliver a church sermon in which he told black teens that “you have damaged your own race.” He imposed stricter curfew hours on weekends, beefed-up police patrols and expanded hours at city-operated recreation centers.

Where is Rev. Jesse Jackson when you need him to talk to the black teenagers who are causing so much trouble in the city of brotherly love?

He said it best in the recent debate “America should mind it’s own business” and worry about our troubles within our boarders. Mr. President, you are in trouble when your own base is turning against you. You aren’t strong enough and you kow tow to the Republicans and Wall Street. The recent debt ceiling debate was a prime example of this.
